Honors and Awards Knight Templar Cross of Honor In accordance with the provisions of Section 237(b) of the Statutes of the Grand Encampment, as amended at the Triennialconclave, the meritorious service award known as the KNIGHTS TEMPLAR CROSS OF HONOR, shall be conferred by the Grand Master on behalf of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar to deserving Sir Knights of Constituent and Subordinate Commanderies upon certain conditions hereinafter set forth. The KNIGHTS TEMPLAR CROSS OF HONOR Shall be awarded “only for exceptional and meritorious service rendered to the order, far beyond the call of duty, and beyond the service usually expected of an officer or member.” In deciding upon the award, precedents shall be entirely ignored and each case shall be decided upon its own unusual merits. No posthumous award shall be made, and no present or past elected Grand Officer of a Grand Commandery shall be eligible for the award. One nomination maybe made from a Grand Commandery membership, regardless of number of members, plus one additional nomination may be made from a Grand Commandery for each 5,000 members, or major fraction thereof, during any one year. Only one nomination may be made from the total of the Subordinate Commanderies during one year. Download FormEvaluation Criteria Grice Award This award was established by Sir Knight George B. Yeates, Right Eminent Grand Commander in 1984. It is awarded by the Grand Commander to a Sir Knight, or Knights who have made significant contributions to his Commandery over a two-year period in one of areas of ritual, administration, Eye Foundation, or Holy Land Pilgrimage. Up to two awards may be made each year at the discretion of the Grand Commander. MSM Required by: December 31 The procedure to be followed for making nominations for the MSM Award shall be as follows: Any Constituent Commandery desiring to make a nomination shall first adopt a formal resolution, setting forth the full name of its nominee, and the nature of the meritorious service upon which such nomination is based. Commander of such Constituent Commandery shall thereupon cause to be filled-in a Nomination Form to be supplied by the Grand Recorder, giving the date, full name of the nominee, address, Templar rank, name of his Commandery and a statement of the nature of the meritorious service upon which such nomination is based. Such Nomination Form shall be signed by the Commander of such Constituent Commandery and shall be forwarded by him to the Grand Commander for consideration. The Grand Commander shall consider all nominations made by Constituent Commanderies and shall select those qualified nominees, one (1) per Constituent Commandery per Grand Commandery year. It shall be the responsibility of the Grand Recorder to order the MSM Awards from the Grand Encampment Office; it shall be the Constituent Commandery responsibility for the cost of the MSM Award without any cost to the recipient. Presentation of the Grand Commandery Meritorious Service Medal shall be made at an appropriate ceremony of Grand Commandery or Consentient Commandery. Application Membership Cordons Required by: March 15 Any Knight Templar who, after May 10, 1985, as a first line signer secures and presents petitions of candidates to receive the Order of Knighthood shall be eligible to receive a membership award in the form of a shoulder cord. To qualify, the petitioner must receive the Order of the Temple and thereby become a member of a Virginia Commandery. All awards presented in accordance with this program shall be returned to the Grand Commandery when the recipient receives a subsequent award for additional petitions. However, the last award received by the recipient shall remain his property. Shoulder cords in the specified colors shall be a braided cord with a loop. The loop shall attach to a black button sewed on top of the left shoulder of the coat of a standard Templar Uniform and three and one-half inches from the shoulder seam. Such awards are worn on the left shoulder and under the sleeve and only one award shall be worn at any time by a Sir Knight. That award being the latest Shoulder Cord that has been presented to him. Sir Knights obtaining one hundred and three or more petitions may receive a white cord and thus begin to progress again through the award sequence above while retaining the black and white cord which in such cases shall be worn on the left shoulder over andoutside the sleeve. Application 3 – White 6 – Silver 9 – Gold 15 – Red 20 – Red and White 25 – Red and Silver 30 – Red and Gold 35 – Red and Purple 40 – Purple and White 45 – Purple and Silver 50 – Purple and Gold 55 – Green and White 60 – Green and Silver 65 – Green and Gold 70 – Green and Red 75 – Blue and White 80 – Blue and Silver 85 – Blue and Gold 90 – Blue and Red 95 – Blue and Purple 100 – Black and White Proficiency Ribbons Upon being certified as proficient in the conferral of the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, the Order of Malta, and/or the Order of the Temple by the Grand Instructor General, Deputy Grand Instructor General, or the District Instructor, the qualifying Sir Knight shall be permitted to purchase a ribbon, distinctive to the Order in which he is deemed proficient, together with the following devices, if applicable, to be worn on the ribbon: A Gold Star for proficiency in conferral of the Order in full form for which the Sir Knight is qualified to confer from the East; A Silver Star for proficiency in the ritual of the Prelate in the Order of the Temple; the Marshal in the Order of Malta; and/or the Master of Infantry / Companion Conductor in the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross; A Bronze Star for proficiency in conferring the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and/or the Order of Malta from the East in short form.

Visit MMS Website Christmas Observance One of the 4 religious celebrations that each Commandery should be holding each year, the Christmas Observance ceremony hosts toasts from the Grand Master of the Grand Encampment of the U.S.A., a response to his toast, and a toast from the Grand Commander of Virginia. Information will be provided when available for 2023. Resolution of Respect The Resolution of Respect is used for Sir Knights who have passed away. This will be used by Recorders so the Commandery can send something to the family to note their sentiments about the Sir Knight if they so choose. View Resolution DDGC Nomination Form Virginia C&S – Section 24(C)(7) Each Constituent Commandery will, no later than October 1 of each year, recommend to the Deputy Grand Commander a Past Commander to serve as District Deputy Grand Commander during the ensuing Chivalric year. The recommendation will be by letter and will include the name of the nominee, the year he served as Commander, and of which Commandery, and such other information as may be of use in determining the selection. History of the Grand Commandery of Virginia On Thursday, November 27, 1823, A.D., in the era of Knights Templar 705 A.O., an assembly of delegates from several Virginia Encampments of Knights Templar met in the Masons’ Hall in Winchester, Virginia. The following Sir Knights in were attendance: Daniel W. Thomas, Warner Throckmorton, Conrad Kremer, and Samuel H. Davis from Winchester Encampment. Jacob R. Thomas, John R. Hayden, Robert Blanchard, and Timothy Herrington from Warren Encampment. Henry Seevers, William B. Whitney, Sutton I. Harris, and William Blanchard from Mt. Carmel Encampment. At the meeting Sir Knight Daniel W. Thomas was elected chairman and Sir Knight Sutton I. Harris secretary of the assembly. The chairman briefed the object of the meeting, with a preamble, and a resolution to establish a Grand Encampment of Sir Knights and the Appendant Orders (Red Cross and Malta) in Winchester, Virginia, for the State of Virginia, and for the government, therefore. It was further resolved that the constitution of the Grand Encampment of the State of Virginia was to be framed by Winchester Encampment. On Friday, November 28, 1823, the resolutions were ratified by the delegates and the Grand Encampment of the State of Virginia was organized with the following officers and to serve for the next twelve months: M.E. Sir James Foster – Grand Sentinel It was resolved that Winchester Encampment No. 1 would continue to work on the governance of the Grand Encampment of the State of Virginia.
